2004 Arbor Day Essay Contest Winners Selected

Amy Beth Ekroth of Burke, Jeremy Bowers of Clark, and Alexis Glen of Sisseton are the winning essayists selected from the 2,076 entries in the 2004 Arbor Day Essay Contest. Sponsored by South Dakota’s conservation districts, McDonald’s Restaurants of South Dakota, South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Keep South Dakota Green Association, the contest provides fifth and sixth grade students the opportunity to write about the importance of Arbor Day and tree planting in South Dakota.

For their efforts, the students win awards and cash prizes in addition to learning more about trees. As first place winner, Kelly receives a plaque, $100 in cash, and a McDonald’s lined jacket. Her school, Burke Middle School, will receive $150 for the purchase of supplies or equipment. Bowers, the second place winner, receives a plaque and $75 cash while Glen receives a plaque and $50 for her third place essay. Ekroth, Bowers and Glen will read their essays and receive their prizes during a special Arbor Day celebration hosted by Governor Rounds at Hilger’s Gulch in Pierre on April 30. All students who entered the contest will receive a McDonald’s dessert certificate and a packet of tree seeds.

Arbor Day is celebrated in South Dakota on the last Friday in April; in 2004, this would be April 30. The very first Arbor Day was proposed by Nebraska newspaper publisher J. Sterling Morton in 1872. On that first Arbor Day, over one million trees were planted in Nebraska.

The essay contest has been held in South Dakota for 27 years.

The school year is starting to wind down. There's still a lot of chemistry to learn however! One lab activity that students really love at this time of year is learning how to tie-dye. Your students will have lots of fun, and you get to sneak in some basic chemical concepts: covalent bonding, acids and bases, and pH. Learning how to tie-dye will create lasting memories that will not fade with time (the colors don't do too badly either).

The instructions for this activity have been expertly co-written by Elnore Grow and Penney Sconzo, two terrific high school teachers who are considered the gurus of tie-dye chemistry. The instructions are very clear and easy to follow. Enjoy tie-dyeing with your students!

Most of you are now starting to prepare your summer science supply orders. Please order from Flinn Scientific. I know budgets are tight. I promise you will receive the best value for your dollar from Flinn. Your orders are the lifeblood of Flinn Scientific. Without your support, Flinn would not exist. Thank you in advance for sending us your valued orders!

Join the rovers on their historic exploration of Mars. The Mars Quest Online website (www.marsquestonline.org/mer) provides easy access to the full set of images from the Mars rovers, in an intuitive point-and-click exploration environment. Explore the glorious full-color panoramic views of Gusev Crater and Meridiani Plain zoom in for close-up views, click on rocks to examine them in microscopic detail, and follow the rovers as they move from site to site. You see the images at the same time as the scientists, with daily updates of ALL new images, through a direct feed from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The fundamental experience is an active, personally-directed exploration, akin to having a front-row seat on a rover as it explores the Martian surface. The site also includes interactive educational activities to help you learn about Mars, rovers and the search for evidence of water (a precursor in the search for life). MarsQuest Online is funded by the National Science Foundation and developed through a collaboration between TERC, the Space Science Institute (SSI), and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. For more information, contact David Shepard at TERC (617-547-0430 or David_Shepard@terc.edu). Better yet, go on-line now and explore Mars at: www.marsquestonline.org/mer

"Creative Space: Fifty Years of Robert Blackburn's Printmaking Workshop"
features works by the master printmaker & by his     collaborators, students, & friends.  Blackburn (1920-2003) changed the course of American art through his graphic work & the Printmaking Workshop, which he founded in New York City in 1948.  His experiments in color lithography helped fuel the explosion of graphic art during the 1960s. (LOC)  http://www.loc.gov/exhibits/blackburn/

"America's Space Program: Exploring a New Frontier" tells the story of America's journey to the moon.  The creation of NASA, the Apollo vehicles, & the January 1967 tragedy are part of the story.  On July 20, 1969, as the Eagle lunar module approached the moon, it became clear that the computer had chosen an unacceptable landing site -- a boulder-  strewn crater.  With 114 seconds of fuel left, astronauts Armstrong & Aldrin overrode the computers & manually landed the Eagle. (NPS,TwHP,NRHP)     www.cr.nps.gov/nr/twhp/wwwlps/lessons/101space/101space.htm

"Galileo's Battle for the Heavens" explains why Galileo is the father of modern science, why Galileo's refractor & Newton's reflector remain the two standard types of optical telescopes today, & Galileo's big mistake.  See demonstrations of his experiments, an illustrated chronology of his life, an online pendulum, & an interactive inclined plane. (NSF) http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/galileo/

"Mars Exploration Rover Mission"
provides images & updates on the two Mars rovers, Spirit (which landed January 3, 2004) & Opportunity (which is expected to land January 24, 2004).  Videos & text depict the challenges of getting to Mars:  testing the rovers on Martian terrain, launching the rovers, navigating their flights, bringing them into the Martian atmosphere, landing them, & getting them out of the lander cocoon. (NASA) http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/home/index.html

"The Secret Life of the Brain" presents a history of efforts to understand the brain, a three-dimensional tour of the brain, optical illusions, & an animation showing how magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) works. Videoclips examine how the brain evolves & differs from infancy to childhood, adolescence, & through adulthood. (NSF) http://www.pbs.org/wnet/brain/

Teacher funding is available this summer and next, but less or nonexistent after that. (We have very good family housing @ $11/day!)  Our web site has contact information on Modeling Workshops in several other states, too.
